Title:
Unable to change screen resolution after upgrade to 5.4.0-42-generic

Status in Ubuntu MATE:
  New
Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
When booting using 5.4.0-42-generic kernel, screen resolution is
fixed at 640x480 and there is no way to change it. Booting using
  5.3.0-62-generic works fine.

In "Displays", the dropdowns for Resolution only has 640x480 for
selection. For Refresh Rate and Rotation there are no selections under
  dropdown.

  OS - 18.04 LTS
  Kernel - 5.4.0-42 previous 5.3.0-62-generic
  Dell Monitor
  NVIDIA GeForce GT 1030
  CPU is AMD Ryzen 5 2600 X Socket AM4

  Questions:
How will I find out that this bug has been fixed?
I understand the issue is the NVIDIA proprietary drivers. Will any AMD GPU
work or are there specific video cards I should look at?
Is there a site that recommends video cards for Linux?

   Thanks,
    Dave
