Dear Christopher, thank you for suggesting this. I would gladly try to run a live environment from the very same USB stick that contained the Ubuntu version (12.04 LTS ) I previously installed.
However, I have a question: if I encounter the same issue (meaning a complete crash of all USB port, preventing me from using both keyboard and mouse) will the logs be saved on the USB stick itself? In this case, I will then reboot the machine and send the logs by running the apport- collect command at a terminal. Everything went fine during install. After roughly 30 minutes of usage, I experienced a complete crash of all USB ports (I had both keyboard and mouse on USB 2.0 ports, and other USB 3.0 were not usable any more). After rebooting, I experienced the same problem again after roughly 20 minutes of usage. Very serious issue, indeed. This desktop PC was then moved to Windows 8.0 and everything went fine from now on. No crashes at all for days and weeks. Therefore, I concluded that this problem was lying 100% on Ubuntu side.
