Hello Christopher, thanks for the comment, but I don't think it's BIOS related.
Verified again on 201202-10592 with 12.10 + update (3.5.0-45) Volume can be controlled by hotkeys, sound could be played normally. But the output device section still empty. With further investigation, it might be caused by pluseaudio an output device (Built-in Audio Analog Stereo) will appear with this command: pactl load-module module-detect please find attachments for "pacmd list-sinks" results before and after this pactl command. $ dpkg -l | grep pulseaudio ii gstreamer0.10-pulseaudio:amd64 0.10.31-3ubuntu1.2 amd64 GStreamer plugin for PulseAudio ii pulseaudio 1:2.1-0ubuntu4.1 amd64 PulseAudio sound server ii pulseaudio-module-bluetooth 1:2.1-0ubuntu4.1 amd64 Bluetooth module for PulseAudio sound server ii pulseaudio-module-gconf 1:2.1-0ubuntu4.1 amd64 GConf module for PulseAudio sound server ii pulseaudio-module-x11 1:2.1-0ubuntu4.1 amd64 X11 module for PulseAudio sound server ii pulseaudio-utils 1:2.1-0ubuntu4.1 amd64 Command line tools for the PulseAudio sound server I will change the affected package, thanks! ** Attachment added: "list-sinks" https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1190482/+attachment/3942233/+files/list-sinks ** Changed in: linux (Ubuntu) Status: Incomplete => Confirmed ** Package changed: linux (Ubuntu) => pulseaudio (Ubuntu) ** Changed in: pulseaudio (Ubuntu) Importance: Medium => Undecided -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1190482 Title: [Dell Vostro 2420] Internal speaker does not show up in "Sound settings" Status in “pulseaudio” package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Bug description: CID: 201202-10592 This is a SRU system which is running 12.10 (3.5.0-34-generic #55-Ubuntu) The internal speaker does not show up in "Sound settings" But I can still play sound through the internal speaker normally (like pressing the volume button) And if you connect a headset to it, there will be a "Headphones" option available in the "Play sound through" list ProblemType: Bug DistroRelease: Ubuntu 12.10 Package: linux-image-3.5.0-34-generic 3.5.0-34.55 ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 3.5.0-34.55-generic 3.5.7.13 Uname: Linux 3.5.0-34-generic x86_64 ApportVersion: 2.6.1-0ubuntu11 Architecture: amd64 AudioDevicesInUse: USER PID ACCESS COMMAND /dev/snd/controlC0: ubuntu 1945 F.... pulseaudio /dev/snd/pcmC0D0c: ubuntu 1945 F...m pulseaudio CRDA: country TW: (2402 - 2472 @ 40), (3, 27) (5270 - 5330 @ 40), (3, 17), DFS (5735 - 5815 @ 40), (3, 30) Date: Thu Jun 13 02:56:11 2013 HibernationDevice: RESUME=UUID=723efe02-01db-495b-bcd1-91893597ef40 InstallationDate: Installed on 2013-06-10 (2 days ago) InstallationMedia: Ubuntu 12.10 "Quantal Quetzal" - Release amd64 (20121017.5) MachineType: Dell Inc.
