Macbook air, 18.10, fn keys to set keyboard backlight do not work

Bug description:
The F5/F6 keys used to work to set the keyboard backillumination level
with 18.04 but they do not work anymore with 18.10 4.18.0-10-generic
The back illumination can be turned on with : echo 255 >
/sys/class/leds/smc\:\:kbd_backlight/brightness but not anymore with
the Fn keys.
I'm not sure if it is a kernel issue or a keyboard mapping / X issue.
Which test should I run to try to figure out where the problem is?
