Ok, I had her run the release kernel (-23) and the issue is there too: $ ifconfig eth0 eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 1c:75:08:5a:9f:b1 UP BROADCAST MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1 RX packets:4294744618 errors:4293631228 dropped:4294521940 overruns:4294744618 frame:4294967295 TX packets:4294744618 errors:4294076580 dropped:0 overruns:4294744617 carrier:4294967295 collisions:4293853901 txqueuelen:1000 RX bytes:4294744618 (4.2 GB) TX bytes:4294744617 (4.2 GB) Interrupt:45
At this point, I think this bug can be closed. I'm not particularly interested in fixing it since it is unrelated to the networking issues I saw with -57. -58 seems to resolve the weird network issues she was having so I think I'm good. Feel free to reopen if someone else can reproduce and wants to pursue fixing it. Thanks! ** Changed in: linux (Ubuntu) Status: Confirmed => Won't Fix -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1259255 Title: incorrect ifconfig output for unused wired ethernet Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu: Won't Fix Bug description: I was trying to diagnose network problems on this machine and found that Ubuntu 12.04 will show the following with ifconfig after a little while: $ ifconfig eth0 eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 1c:75:08:5a:9f:b1 UP BROADCAST MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1 RX packets:4294869934 errors:4294383121 dropped:4294772570 overruns:4294869933 frame:4294967295 TX packets:4294869933 errors:4294577844 dropped:0 overruns:4294869933 carrier:4294967295 collisions:4294480481 txqueuelen:1000 RX bytes:4294869934 (4.2 GB) TX bytes:4294869933 (4.2 GB) Interrupt:45 eth0 is the wired ethernet and is not in use on this machine. The machine is only using wlan0. I don't know if the network issues I am seeing on the machine relate to this or not. I'm not sure when this came up-- -55, -56, -57 and -58 all exhibit the problem (though, I don't have a simple reproducer-- it seems to come up after using the network for a while). -23 didn't produce the problem with the testing I performed (ie, within the same amount of time that it would show up with the other kernels). linux-generic-lts-saucy also didn't show it, but I couldn't run that kernel for very long because the nvidia-304 driver didn't work properly there.
