The laptop in question now runs Windows 8 and the light STILL isn't consistent with the sound chip's actual state. I'm chalking this one up to a hardware flaw that's not worth working around. Feel free to close.

On this laptop, the light inside the mute button above the keyboard is supposed to turn orange whenever the system sound is muted. Right now, it might turn orange for a few seconds after you press it, but it mostly just stays blue.
