I have since managed to work out that my laptop had developed a hardware
fault, so I am 99% sure that those kernel lockups are due to that fault.
The laptop has now been decomissioned, so there is not much point
chasing this down further. This bug report can be closed, thanks.

I don't have a lot of information to dd, but running kernel
4.15.0-48-generic was leading to frequent hard lockups. Rolling back
to 4.15.0-47-generic has clearly resolved my problem.
