The number of columns is semi-true, as the shell wraps them, however, one can print things beyond 80 cols. Ideally resizing qemu window, should manage to report the actual number of lines and columns to the underlying terminal. Similarly, one should be able to resize ASCII terminal window in HMC beyond 80x24. These days everyone has HD widescreen monitors, there is no reason to limit to 80x24.
