The issue started after upgrading from Ubuntu 17.10 to 18.04LTS. I did not note the kernel version before upgrading, but it would have been the default accomodating 17.10. I kept the notebook up to date, and I did not have any reason to change to a non-default kernel. > Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? After upgrading to 18.04, closing the lid regularly (but not always) results in either: 1. The display staying on with a frozen lock-screen, or 2. The display powered off, but the notebook still powered on. In both cases the notebook does not respond. A five-second press of the power button to hard-reboot the computer is the only means of recovery. After powering the notebook back on, there are no files in /var/crash.
