The issue reported in comment #108 is still present in kernel 4.15.3: 4.15.3-041503-generic #201802120730 [ 4.645868] [drm:intel_enable_lvds [i915]] *ERROR* timed out waiting for panel to power on
It is also present in kernel 4.15.18. However, it is not present in kernel 4.16.16 and it is also not present in kernel 4.17.2. All kernels were downloaded from http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/ and installed with sudo dpkg -i The latest kernel offered by Ubuntu 18.04 is still 4.15.0, but that one already fixes the original issue with the X Windows not working, at least it does so on Toshiba Portege laptop. However 4.15.0 does not fix the issue reported in comment #108.
