It seems this was already worked on by apw for bionic. I am marking this new report as duplicate against that one and will work on backporting changes done there into Artful and Xenial. ** This bug has been marked a duplicate of bug 1748922 linux-tools: perf incorrectly linking libbfd -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1751852 Title: please drop linking of libbfd Status in linux package in Ubuntu: Triaged Bug description: This is a rehash of <https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/783660>. linux- tools in xenial and later is again dynamically linking against libbfd. It should not; this makes linux-tools packages not installable across releases, which is important for debugging etc., because of a strict versioned dependency on binutils. This also prevents us from e.g. being able to forward-copy kernels between releases when this is appropriate. I understand the preferred option is to drop the linkage against libbfd completely. Either this should be done, or libbfd should be statically linked.
