I get the following warning: Laptop battery critically low The battery is below the critical level and the computer is about to suspend. NOTE: A small amount of power is required to keep your computer in a suspended state. After resuming, I am able to continue working for hours. The trigger is the removal of the power supply. This does not happen when the battery is 100% full, only when it is charging.
