Sorry to answer so late.

@Kristoffer: I did the things you mentioned, it didn't help.

what helped me was to boot into recoverymode and use the dpkg-option there, I
also recognized that nvidia might be a part of the problem (I also suspected
the displaylink I am using)
So after rebooting again into normal mode I removed everything nvidia and
displaylink, installed the recent kernel packages without any problems and then
reinstalled nvidia and displaylink.

Since then apt did some additional kernel updates and removed old ones
without problems.

I am sorry that I can't really reproduce the exact setup with kernel and
nvidia packages being updated maybe at the same time which I assume
could cause this problem.

Title:
  package linux-image-4.8.0-44-generic 4.8.0-44.47 failed to
install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script was
  killed by signal (Terminated)

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
Installation of this package using apt hangs at 'run-parts: executing
/etc/kernel/postinst.d/dkms 4.8.0-44-generic /boot/vmlinuz-4.8.0-44-generic'
with no process activity observable by htop or others.
killing the process and running 'dpkg --configure -a' hangs at the same
position, 'apt purge *4.8.0-44*' hangs at the same position.

I remember this happening before for a different kernel but can't
  remember which.

Please tell me if and which information is needed additionally to the
  automatic collected data.
