Installed development module overnight 4.11.0-041100rc2-generic and commented out the above changes in the /etc/default/grub. Working at the moment, but it's intermittent.
I did leave the /50-synaptics file with the extra two lines alone, so they loaded. Joseph - I recall an email asking me to comment out the i8042.nomux=1(?) in the kernel. I can't find that - where would I find it?
