I don’t think this is an Ubuntu bug, but I’ll add my observations anyway for anyone who might Duck Duck Go this ticket in an effort to find out what’s happening to their computer.
I have a ThinkPad X200s, and the issue was originally just that upon entering into suspend, the computer would restart—unfortunately (or even more so) only a few seconds or minutes after the suspend actually succeeded, so that my laptop booted in the backpack several times. It has survived that though. More recently it began to restart spontaneously. I didn’t make the connection with the power supply, but in retrospect it does seem like it only happens when I’m at the university or at friends’ places where I unplug the AC from time to time. Most of the time I work at home with AC plugged in all the time, and then the problem never occurs. It may also be possible that it occurs a while after moving the laptop about (the acceleration sensors might pick up on that), but the AC theory seems more likely to me. I don’t think it’s heat-related; the CPU was mostly idling when it happened the last couple of times. What I also observed is that after the most recent crash, the syslog and kern.log files were filled with lots of null bytes at the time of the crash. Otherwise they didn’t reveal anything insightful to me. I just cleaned the interior of the laptop and reset the BIOS defaults. If that doesn’t help, I’ll update the BIOS, but the change log didn’t look like they fixed any issue similar to this one. The reason I don’t think it’s Ubuntu-related is that I installed a Debian a few days ago to convert it into an LMDE (because the LMDE installer doesn’t support full disk encryption), but the problem persists. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1176122 Title: computer randomly restarts when ac power adapter is used. Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu: Expired Bug description: this is a problem with all ubuntu variants and others based on ubuntu (namely linux mint). it exists in 13.04 and 12.10 and if the laptop is pluged into ac power, the laptop will randomly restart. it could be in 30 seconds, or 30 minutes. I have left the laptop to sit, at desktop, come back and opened a terminal and bam! computer restarts. no warning. by accident I had it unplugged one day and it did not restart once. I finally figured out the source of the problem (ac power cord). this problem does not exist with other Linux distributions. Ubuntu and Linux Mint are the only ones with the problem. If I install Ubuntu or Mint and run on battery power, excellent. no crashes of any kind. the problem only exists when ac power charger cable is plugged in. --- ApportVersion: 2.9.2-0ubuntu8 Architecture: amd64 AudioDevicesInUse: USER PID ACCESS COMMAND /dev/snd/controlC0: dave 1955 F.... pulseaudio DistroRelease: Ubuntu 13.04 HibernationDevice: RESUME=UUID=abac56ff-271b-49a5-a912-e76be0c26042 InstallationDate: Installed on 2013-05-04 (2 days ago) InstallationMedia: Ubuntu 13.04 "Raring Ringtail" - Release amd64 (20130424) MachineType: ASUSTeK Computer Inc.
