Title:
Ubuntu 16.04 upgrade:system unable to shutdown or restart. system
making lots of noise from cpu fan after boot. NMI watchdog: BUG: soft
lockup - CPU#5 stuck for 23s! [plymouthd:305] error during upgrade,
  unable to clear orphaned inodes.

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
I have ASUS ROG GL552v core i7hq and nvidia geforce 960m. I recently
installed ubuntu 14.04 and the system worked perfectly except for the
resolution and some minor issues since the hardwares are quite recent for
14.04. However, I could shutdown quite well and there was no unnecessary noise.
I upgraded to 16.04 only to discover that I could not shutdown the laptop or
restart unless I manually shutdown with the on/off button. Also, the laptop
starts making noise which i guess is from the cpu fans immediately after
booting up, the noise doesn't stop untill I manually shutdown the system.
I recall that while finalizing the upgrade, the system stuck at the point
with message 'clearing orphaned inodes'. after several minutes without clearing
the inodes, it displayed a message 'NMI watchdog: BUG: soft lockup - CPU#5
stuck for 23s! [plymouthd:305] '. it kept bringing out this message repeatedly
even when i left it running for more than an hour until i manually shutdown
with the button.
I would appreciate any help in resolving this issues.
  THanks
