I have the same problem: with kernel linux-image-4.8.0-26-generic, the system randomly freezes completely (black screen, no network) a few time a day with no apparent correlation to any software activity or cpu heat.
My laptop is an HP ProBook 6550b. GPU: Intel Corporation Core Processor Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 02) Driver: i915 Kubuntu 16.10 recently upgraded. The only difference with OP is that it doesn't freeze when I logout. I just reverted to linux-image-4.8.0-22-generic. I'll post here whether it fixes the issue. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to linux in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1639560 Title: linux-image-4.8.0-26-generic causes complete system freeze Status in linux package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Bug description: Hello, When using kernel linux-image-4.8.0-26-generic 4.8.0-26.28 and after applying latest available updates, the system randomly freezes/hangs and a forced shutdown is required. It can be easily reproduced by trying to press the "logout" button. The system would immediately hang. Reverting to previous kernel, 4.8.0-22.24 fixes the issue. My hardware is a Dell XPS 13 laptop, model 9343. It has the Intel HD graphics card, using i915 module. Description: Ubuntu 16.10 Release: 16.10 Thanks!
