~$ lsb_release -rd
Description: Ubuntu 16.04.1 LTS

~$ apt-cache policy linux-image-4.4.0.45-generic

After hitting bug 1633172 and the workaround putting me in a worse state
than the initial bug, I started from scratch with Xenial. That worked
for a short 24 hours.

Then this morning, I got an update for my nvidia drivers. After I
upgraded the drivers, I could no longer boot into ubuntu with kernel
4.4.0-45-generic. If I booted with kernel 4.4.0-31-generic, I no longer
had an issue.

Tried setting nomodeset in grub, but to no effect.
