The screen shot you attached is similar to the trace in bug 1626894.  We
identified the offending commit in that bug.  Can you test the following
kernel to see if its the same issue you are having?  The test kernel can
be downloaded from:

  I've just tried both -39 and -40 in xenial-proposed, and both fail to
  boot on my laptop (dropping to busybox - see the attached screenshot).

  This is a regression over -38, which works fine.
