Even then with workloads that stress the VM I have been able to make it completely unresponsive. There were two situations where I observed this: - OpenOffice loading a document full of images from disk. Midway through the process the system became completely unresponsive. - Running a script that unpacked a series of tar archives and compared them with diff. I created a 1GB tmpfs dir to do it in to not have the uncompressed archives ever hit disk. Midway through the process the system again became completely unresponsive In both situations the harddrive light was on continuously and it could be heard working. Since none of the workloads actually writes to disk and there's no swap the only thing I can imagine can be happening is that dirty buffers are being written back to free memory. I didn't expect this to have such an adverse impact on responsiveness of the system though.
