But, it would took about 30 seconds before the boot sequence would start, because the GRUB partition was not "blessed" (a particularity of UEFI systems in apple hardware). So I rebooted, held down command+alt+R, which boots from "internet recovery mode" into MacOSX (I don't have otherwise MacOSX installed), from the apple menu I opened a terminal and: 1. Listed the partitions with "diskutil list" to find out which partition has GRUB. 2. Run the blessing command: "bless --device /dev/disk1s1 --setBoot --legacy --verbose". (While there, I took the opportunity to silence the startup chime sound with "nvram SystemAudioVolume=%00".) Upon reboot, there is no more delay (hurray!) but now the 4.4.0-21 kernel would lead to a freeze upon reaching the desktop password prompt. The keyboard and mouse were unresponsive. To address this, I forced shutdown by holding down the power key for 5 seconds, then rebooted holding down the "ESC" key to enter the GRUB menu, and added "acpi=off" to the kernel parameters. The result: booted just fine. The freeze is reproducible. Happened a number of times until I understood that acpi was the issue. Running without a battery charge indicator or a broken wifi is not ideal. Is there any workaround to this issue?
