The system itself seems to be working, if I press the power button, the HDD shows some activity. 2.6.32-21-generic was fine, the problem appeared with 2.6.32-22-generic. Adding atkbd.reset as follows to /etc/default/grub, followed by update-grub fixed the issue for me.
