Can you specify if I should be testing for the black screen on bootup, the failure of the nomodeset workaround, or both?

On this machine, it appeared somewhere in the last week of January, 2016, after a system update. On boot, the laptop monitor often flickers several times (signal connecting and disconnecting) and always settles onto a full backlight back screen. The screen does not change after that. I found reports that adding nomodeset to the grub parameters would resolve the issue. It does, but the workaround has significant issues in 16.04. The nomodeset parameters conflict with both the amdgpu driver package and the radeon driver package. When the machine boots, it is in 800x600 resolution.
