In other words, memory seems to be being lost without being associated to some process. I don't now if this could be the fault of the kernel, some module, or something else. I would appreciate any pointers on how to try to pinpoint the culprit. The bug has been filed with ubuntu-bug so all process memory usage should be included. As I write, I see around 4G of swap used, and the program using the most is using ~80MB only. Certainly, the aggregated swap seen with top in programs is nowhere near 4G. The swap use seems legit, since once the swap space is reported exhausted, the computer starts being less responsive, until I reboot.
