When I hotplug the monitor to my laptop and try to play audio through "HDMI" the audio plays at what seems to be half speed. The source of the audio does not matter (local audio/video, internet audio/video stream etc) but if the laptop is rebooted with the monitor connected, the problem does not manifest. Playing audio through the internet laptop speakers with any setup seems to work fine, as does playing audio through the laptop headphone jack.
