Public bug reported: There was not enough free space for the update. I used sudo apt-get purge $(dpkg -l linux-{image,headers}-"[0-9]*" | awk '/ii/{print $2}' | grep -ve "$(uname -r | sed -r 's/-[a-z]+//')")
After using the above command and rebooting the installation asked me to install a partial update, which I did. Then near the end I got the message 'the upgrade has aborted' dpkg configure a will be run now.
