** Description changed: The Linux kernel seems to have an issue with my on-board networking adapter and the ACPI of my computer. On doing some research this seems to be a very old and somewhat common bug that no one has ever done anything about. This bug results in two things: My on-board networking doesn't work, and trying to restart or shutdown the computer freezes the system. With an older 12.04 kernel, 3.2.0-23.36, there were two workarounds. https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1003297 And in a more recent version there was still a practical workaround https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1003297 The first mentioned of these still works: 1) Boot into rescue mode, drop to the terminal, run "rmmod forcedeth" then "modprobe forcedeth msi=0 msix=0" then resume a normal boot. This enabled both networking and regular ACPI functions. But is a one-off that needs to be repeated at every start up and several graphics drivers do ot function well until the next normal boot. So that is very much a compromise. The more stable work arounds listed at the references cannot now be applied because the structure of the kernel has changed. I assume that a work around could be produced but my knowledge is insufficient to do it myself. I would dearly and urgently love to find a solution as I have an unusable PC at the moment.
