I FINALLY got it to work. I cleared out the /var/cache/apt/archives/
forced Synaptic to re-download a fresh copy of chromium's .deb file from another mirror, and the upgrading of chromium went thru without a hitch. I do NOT UNDERSTAND how SOFTWARE UPDATER managed to download a bad copy or an incomplete copy without the bad copy failing the checking of the hashtags! I do NOT UNDERSTAND how Synaptic did not perform a check of the hashtag for the file when the file failed to work properly! Seems like several failures by two major pieces of software in the regard led me down the wrong paths... Both should be checking the files before allowing them to reside in the /var/cache/apt/archives/. Perhaps someone could point me to where I can light a fire of COMMON SENSE under both groups handling those two packages, to include a CHECK HASHTAGS OF ALL FILES INSIDE THE /var/cache/apt/archives/ FUNCTION!
