This is an old laptop. This is a new install of Ubuntu 14.04. A little bit ago, while attempting to install a lot of updates through the GUI, after I had locked the screen, the laptop seemed to go unresponsive. I switched over to a virtual terminal (Ctrl+Alt+F1). At first there was a message saying the GPU had crashed or locked or something and that it was switched to a frame buffer. There's definitely some sort of issue with the graphics card: when I press Alt+Tab, the small window previews appear garbled.
