As a workaround, loading the snd-hda-intel module with the "model=generic" seems to make the auto-mute working.

The problem is that when I plug in my headphones, the speakers (connected via the back connector) continue to play as well. Also, I haven't found yet a way to set the volume independently for the headphones and the speakers via the Gnome/Unity sound settings.
