In the end I solved this problem by switching to Wicd Network Manager (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WICD) and the problem has not emerged again.
Note: The default Network Manager is still installed on my system, but I have disabled Networking on it and no longer use it. WICD works better across wifi and wired networks I have found - generally speaking. ** Attachment removed: "AlsaInfo.txt" https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1442781/+attachment/4372051/+files/AlsaInfo.txt ** Attachment removed: "BootDmesg.txt" https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1442781/+attachment/4372052/+files/BootDmesg.txt ** Attachment removed: "CRDA.txt" https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1442781/+attachment/4372053/+files/CRDA.txt ** Attachment removed: "CurrentDmesg.txt" https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1442781/+attachment/4372054/+files/CurrentDmesg.txt ** Attachment removed: "IwConfig.txt" https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1442781/+attachment/4372055/+files/IwConfig.txt ** Attachment removed: "Lspci.txt" https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1442781/+attachment/4372056/+files/Lspci.txt ** Attachment removed: "Lsusb.txt" https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1442781/+attachment/4372057/+files/Lsusb.txt ** Attachment removed: "ProcCpuinfo.txt" https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1442781/+attachment/4372058/+files/ProcCpuinfo.txt ** Attachment removed: "ProcEnviron.txt" https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1442781/+attachment/4372059/+files/ProcEnviron.txt ** Attachment removed: "ProcInterrupts.txt" https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1442781/+attachment/4372060/+files/ProcInterrupts.txt ** Attachment removed: "PulseList.txt" https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1442781/+attachment/4372062/+files/PulseList.txt ** Attachment removed: "ProcModules.txt" https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1442781/+attachment/4372061/+files/ProcModules.txt ** Attachment removed: "RfKill.txt" https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1442781/+attachment/4372063/+files/RfKill.txt ** Attachment removed: "UdevDb.txt" https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1442781/+attachment/4372064/+files/UdevDb.txt ** Attachment removed: "UdevLog.txt" https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1442781/+attachment/4372065/+files/UdevLog.txt ** Attachment removed: "WifiSyslog.txt" https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1442781/+attachment/4372066/+files/WifiSyslog.txt ** Description changed: When I attempt to use wifi it keeps saying its authenticating and then does not connect. I can see all the 2G wifi networks. Network manager will keep trying for up to an hour and then suddenly it will connect like magic!
