Please run 'apport-collect 1450905' from a terminal on your system, to collect information about which kernel you're running that may be causing the problem. Please also explain in detail what happens when you say the laptop "will not boot up properly".
This is unlikely to be a grub issue. The only changes to the grub2 package in the 14.04 series have been targeted fixes that would not impact a laptop.
