With Ubuntu 9.04 (also with recent Suse and Fedora versions) I had to add a model parameter to the modprobe.d/*.conf file. I used model=5stack and was happy with sound an 9.04. The current karmic version gives me no sound on the internal speakers for all configurations I tried (3stack, 5stack, 6stack and hp-hdx). The headphone is currently working, but no other speaker. This bug could be related to 400682, but it is a slightly different notebook and sound card.
