I switched the computer in question to a file server, so now it's running Precise server version and text only mode. I haven't seen the issue yet, but it's only been a week since the switch. I'm sorry, I'm not able to switch to other kernels for testing at this time.

MCE error message (screen photo attached) seemed to indicate a hardware problem, but after running hardware tests and reviewing existing bug reports, I thought maybe it's the new kernel. So I added lucid repositories and installed linux 2.6.38 from there, and the machine has been running without a hitch for several weeks. There is a bug with the 3.0 kernel series, hope it can be addressed for 12.04. The machine is a Shuttle ST 20 G5, with AMD Athlon 64 and 2GB of memory. Not the most standard of motherboards, but it's been working fine with 2.x kernels for 5+ years. --- AlsaVersion: Advanced Linux Sound Architecture Driver Version 1.0.23.
