Backlit keyboard stopped working

Bug description:
Hi,
My backlit keyboard used to work fine under Maverick, although no
notification was shown on screen when hitting Fn+Z.
Now I can see the notification but that doesn't turn the back led light on
and off as it used to.
If I set in the BIOS to auto (turning it on when I type and turning it off
after 15 seconds) it works, although Fn+Z shows the notification and doesn't
change the state.
