just had this problem when installing 12.04.2 LTS on a macbook pro 5.5 i could use the default image, but at the grub boot parameters i had to add "nomodeset" and remove the "gfxmode $linux_gfx_mode". for debugging purposes i removed "quiet" and "splash" earlier to see where it hangs...

When I boot the live USB (both oneiric and precise), deleting the "splash" and "quiet" options from GRUB, I get this error after about 4 seconds, after which the compter freezes: [drm] nouveau 000:02:00.0: Detected an NVc0 generation card (0x0ce00a1) fb: conflicting fb hw usage nouveaufb vs EFI VGA - removing generic driver I have not found any way how to prevent nouveaufb from kicking in, e.g. via blacklist=nouveaufb or similar. This problem is not mentioned in release notes for oneiric or precise either.
