Thank you very much for replying. I could not install the bios that you recommended, because I don't have a diskette drive. However, I have found a workaround for the problem by converting to Xubuntu 12.04 Precise Pangolin.
Apparently there is something different in the startup for Ubuntu and Xubuntu. I switched to Xubuntu on a forum recommendation from somebody who was having the exact same problem as me (Shutdown, Restart, Suspend, Hibernate fails) on a Compaq computer (I don't know if it was the exact same model). His Compaq also would not run correctly on Ubuntu, but performed fine on Xubuntu. I would prefer to be running Ubuntu as that is what I run on my Dell D610 laptops, a fix to this problem would be appreciated.
