I have seen this problem since an early KDE 4.10, so i stepped over to Thunderbird. Yesterday i made some test, but akonadi filled my /var/log/mail with 35MB messages in 5 hours. i use a SSD on my local IMAP-Server and i don't want to buy a new one ;-) I can break the cycle, if i log off from KDE, but it starts again after a various time.
