I think the debian-hurd 1-byte mails came up like this. I made a new filter for the debian-hurd mails and pressed Ctrl-J while Akonadi was under load after POP3 retrieval. I am not sure I even pressed twice, but I got the popup that it was not able to move the mail. In any case, on a failed move attempt I expect the mail to be still in inbox. In other words, I expect the mail move to be atomic.
