If I understand the original problem right, the "sent" folder _is_ correctly specified, but the messages aren't uploaded to the server. I do have this problem as well (with just one of my IMAP accounts). It happens with messages that have flags set which the IMAP server doesn't support (f.e. $SENT, which is bad in this case as kmail/akonadi sets this for sent messages).
