I thought the same thing too at first. I actually wasted over an hour trying to figure out why my two-line change was producing mode (d) and not mode (c). It didn't make sense. Then finally I realized that I had to rebuild and reinstall not only kde-base/kmail but also kde-base/kdepim-common-libs. (I'm on Gentoo.)
