What seems to trigger the problem here is a loss of internet connection. If the internet connection fails while kmail is downloading messages, sometimes (not always) it will download again all messages stored in the server, including the ones already downloaded weeks or months ago, when the internet connection is restablished. This happens with my gmail accounts (which are configured in KMail as POP3 accounts, not IMAP accounts). I choose to leave the messages at the server after download for exactly the same reason the original reporter mentioned: I want to be able to download the messages again using other devices (smartphone, tablet and computer).
