It turned out to be actually autosave related. After moving away ~/.kde/share/apps/kmail2/autosave, I was able to start KMail again. autosave contains 7 messages, all referring to the same reply I was composing previously, while 2 of them seem to have broken formatting (newline after each word in the reply).
