I tried to fetch the articles for gmane.comp.kde.cvs on news.gmane.org (with a
new account). In the options, Reading News/General tab the Maximum number of
articles to fetch is 1000 (but tried with lower numbers, like 10, 50). Still
KNode fetches much more, for the above newsgroup it fetched 109954 items and
"sorting" them took hours on a Core2Duo with 3GB RAM. For other newsgroups it
also fetched more then 1000.
