Firefox "mailto" (under "Applications") is fine, as the launch of a kmail's new message form proves (I checked Firefox configuration too). It would be interesting to sniff the IPC message that Firefox sent to see if the information is there or not. I would be glad to help on this, just let me know what would be an appropriate tool for this purpose.
