If that doesn't work for you, check the cache policy of the root local folder. In KMail, right-click on "Local Folders", click "Folder Properties", go to the "Retrieval" tab. There, the option "Retrieve message bodies on demand" should be checked, with the "keep message bodies locally for" time set to 1 minute. If you are still seeing this behaviour, please file a bug against the maildir resource.
