Coincidentally, I've been having similar issues with ExpressVPN recently.
then I finally realized Network Manager wasn't happy starting the VPN from the
Firefox app.
so I had to by-hand create a real VPN configuration in Network Manager.
sounds like nordVPN is better than expressVPN in this regard.
