Thanks for the suggestion Thomas. I ram kmail with --nofork and saw this.
"Couldn't create speller for "bg" : The file "/usr/lib/aspell/bg.multi" can
not be opened for reading.

/usr/lib/aspell/bg.multi -> /etc/alternatives/bulgarian-aspell-dictionary was a
broken link so I removed the file. All is well now. Thanks for your help.
