This is happening to me with KDE 4's Kmail, upon checking for mail I get the
following error
"Could not connect to host mail.charter.net: Unknown error."
I know that Konqueror from KDE4 has trouble loading websites and I get the same
"Unknown error" from Konqueror. I don't know if the two problems are related
but online IMAP is always able to be checked. I am using a backported KDEPIM
from KDE 4.1 Beta 2 onto KDE 4.0.4.
