Running out of disk space will cause all sorts of havoc. It's for this reason that we have a little notifier to warn you when you're low on space. If you saw it and ignored it, that's on you. :) If you didn't see it because it wasn't running, this is a distro misconfiguration issue and I would recommend reporting it to Ubuntu.
